3DS NES Games Will Feature Multiplayer

Remember the good old days when you would play something like Battletoads or River City Ransom on the NES with a buddy? Those were some fun times indeed. One of the bigger fears in 3DS adopters has been the inclusion of multiplayer in NES games for the 3DS. Will the Big N release these titles with multiplayer capabilities intact? Or will they leave the component out, like so many of us kind of expect of the company?

Nintendo has revealed that NES games will definitely sport multiplayer features. According to the company, early adopters of the 3DS, or “Ambassadors,” will be able to get their hands on the NES titles before their official launch dates (for free). It seems the mulitplayer functionality won’t be present in these games until after their official launch periods, however.

Speaking to IGN, the Big N clarified that Ambassadors will be able to download the updated NES games absolutely free of charge. “When the NES games become available to the general public later this year, they will include additional features such as multiplayer simultaneous play,” clarified a Nintendo representative. “Ambassadors will then be able to download those updated versions at no cost.”

It’s good to know that Nintendo plans on keeping the original multiplayer format of its NES games intact for their re-launch on the 3DS. To leave out such an enjoyable feature would be foolhardy, but that hasn’t stopped the company from making similar blunders before. Here’s hoping we get some reputable NES games such as Double Dragon II, Contra, and hopefully even Battletoads. Make it happen, Nintendo!
