Disney Closes Split/Second Dev Black Rock

Disney Interactive has closed down Black Rock Studios, the developer behind games such as Split/Second and Pure. The company had previously cut staff members from the developer, but it seems like Black Rock has gotten the full-blown axe now. News of the closure came via Eurogamer, who managed to get the facts, as well as some additional dirt on the whole fiasco.

Disney Interactive’s official statement read as follows: “Disney Interactive Studios confirms that Black Rock Studios’ current project has not been greenlit for further development. Consequently the company informed employees yesterday of the intent to enter a consultation process on the proposal to close the studios.”

Eurogamer reported that an anonymous source close to the situation mentioned how Disney “handled Black Rock clumsily.” According to this individual, Disney outsourced games to other companies even though Black Rock was totally capable of developing them. The unknown source also expressed frustration with Disney’s lack of promotion for both Split/Second and Pure.

It’s a shame to see another reputable developer go under. Here’s hoping the folks who just lost their jobs aren’t without work for too long. GameZone would like to extend well wishes to all of the former staff of Black Rock Studios.
