Gears of War 3 Maps Lighten Up

Based on gameplay data collected from Gears of War 2, senior gameplay designer, Lee Perry, realized that the most-played maps were the brightest.

“You can almost rank how much [maps are] played by how bright they are,” Perry told OXM. “The darker, dreary, more depressing maps tend to be on the bottom.”

This discovery led Perry to create dark maps that are more “movie” dark; more blue than black.

Meanwhile, lead multiplayer designer Jim Brown is searching for a better way to present map packs to Gears players. The free Flashback map pack included with the purchase of the game was downloaded by less than 30 percent of players.
