Horrific BioShock Film Has Funding Issues

Since 2008, we’ve been hearing rumors, speculation, and even official announcements regarding a BioShock film. Unfortunately, despite the major success the franchise has had, a couple of issues have deterred the production of the feature film based on the 2K Games license.

A deal between Take-Two Interactive and Universal Studios went through, but the heavy cost of the BioShock film has been the main constraint in getting the film done. Original director Gore Verbinski listed a $160 million funding cost due to the planned underwater environment, which would come at a hefty price.

Additionally, Verbinski stated that anything other than an R-rating wouldn’t fit the vision he had for the film. “It’s a movie that has to be really, really scary, but you also have to create a whole underwater world, so the price tag is high,” he said. ” We just didn’t have any takers on an R-rated movie with that price tag.”

It’s interesting to think of what was going on in Verbinski’s mind as he brainstormed the ideas for the horror film. “I just wanted to really, really make it a movie where, four days later, you’re still shivering and going, ‘Jesus Christ!'”

Verbinski has since stepped down as director for the BioShock movie, but he is said to still be involved with the film, which is now being directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo of 28 Weeks Later fame. No other details are known regarding the BioShock film at the moment.
