Star Wars Galaxies Joins the Force

After eight long and joyous years, Star Wars Galaxies has come to a halt.  As of last night, December 15th, SWG is no more.  The game that taught gamers to love Star Wars in an MMO has stepped down.  It was believed that Galaxies was ahead of its time.  At release, the game had so much unique content, crafting, huge worlds, and of course player built communities / cities.  While Galaxies has gone through SEVERAL changes over the years, the game continued to produce over its near decade run.

I’d always thought what would it be like if a dynamic and ahead of its time came out now-a-days?  Would be successful?  Would it work?  Would it need the Star War label?  Unknown.  Maybe someday.

Is it coincidence that Star Wars: The Old Republic, a new Star Wars MMO, officially comes out in 4 days (December 20th)?  I’m going to say no, people know what they’re doing.  In no way is The Old Republic a continuation of Galaxies.  They have well… Star Wars in common.

Hats off to Galaxies.  Below is an official Thank You from a producer of SWG.

A Thank You to the Star Wars Galaxies Community

Looking back on Star Wars Galaxies and all these years I am so thankful for being able to be a part of the Star Wars Galaxies community both as the Producer and as a fan. It would not have been the incredible experience that it was without you, the players and fans, the dedicated team of people who worked on it over the years and the fantastic Star Wars® galaxy itself, which offered us a very unique and compelling place to explore, fight, play, make friends, and build our homes.

On behalf of the Star Wars Galaxies team, thank you. We have truly enjoyed getting to know you – our dedicated players – over the years. From in-game events to Fan Faires, we appreciate your continued loyalty and support. It would not have been possible without you.

May the Force be with you. Always.
