Minecraft default world height to be increased ‘in the future’

Today, Minecraft lead developer Jens Bergensten announced plans for an increased world height in Minecraft.

Revealing plans via Twitter, Jens tweeted the image above along with, "Default world height is likely to be increased in the future."

Jens didn't exactly say when, but did say he has already made a converter that would prevent the new height from destroying current maps.  Jens confirmed the new height would update current worlds by adding more air blocks on top, so current Minecraft players will not have to restart a world to have this.

For those hoping for even more biomes, there are currently no plans to change the world generator so no volcano or alpine biomes.

For the first time in a while, former lead developer and creator of Minecraft, Markus 'Notch' Persson, praised Jens work on the game writing, "I am terribly excited about how @jeb_ is doing things to Minecraft I was cautious of doing. This is exactly what the game needs now. <3"
