iPad 3 to release on March 16, pre-orders begin today for $499

Apple has officially confirmed the iPad 3 today at their live press event in San Francisco.

During the event, Apple confirmed many of the iPad 3's rumored features including retina display, 4G LTE, voice dictation, 1080p video recording, and much more!

The official release date for the iPad 3 will be March 16, but Apple fans can begin pre-ordering the next-gen iPad as early as today.

That's right, Apple has officially confirmed that pre-orders for the brand new iPad can be made today, starting at $499 for the 16GB model, the same price as the current iPad 2.

The official model pricing is below:

  • 32GB – $599
  • 64GB – $699

If you prefer the brand new 4G LTE models pricing is as follows:

  • 16GB 4G LTE – $629
  • 32GB 4G LTE – $729
  • 64GB 4G LTE – $829

Pre-orders are available in the U.S., Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Japan – all launching on the same day as part of Apple's biggest rollout ever.

Despite technically being available today for pre-order, the Apple site has not yet been updated.  I expect it will be in a few hours.
