Borderlands 2 releases today in North America amid high expectations

Borderlands 2, the sequel to 2009's first-person co-op shooter, makes its grand debut today with a release in North America. Developed by Gearbox, the highly anticipated sequel has much more hype to live up to than its predecessor. Whereas the original was a surprise hit for 2K Games and Gearbox, fans now are expected much more with Borderlands 2. More guns, more enemies, more loot, more action, and more fun. So far, it looks like Gearbox has delivered, promising a "bazillion" more guns.

Borderlands 2 is a game made by gamers for gamers,” said 2K Games President Christoph Hartmann. “The unique visual art style, all-new characters, loads of loot, 87 bazillion guns, and role-playing-shooting combine for a truly addictive experience, especially when played with three other friends."

"The initial response from the press has been fantastic and the game is poised to be one of the highest-rated titles in the history of 2K," he added.

While the same shoot and loot feel is still present in Borderlands 2, everything about this title is an upgrade overs the original. There are more diverse environments, smarter enemy AI, and, of course, even more weapons. It also features all-new characters and skill trees, as well as a fifth playable character — Gaige, the Mechromancer — who will be release on October 16 as free DLC for anyone who pre-ordered Borderlands 2.

"Borderlands 2 is a Gearbox team passion project through and through," said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software. "Borderlands 2 is a must-play, one-of-a-kind single-player game and the best-in-class cooperative experience. Bring friends!"

And fans will have plenty to play with now that the game is released. Gearbox has already said Borderlands 2 will have four add-on content campaigns which will be available individually or as a combined purchase of the Borderlands 2 Season Pass. This pass includes nearly $40 of add-on content for just $29.99, making it a smart purchase if you intend on getting the DLC.

Our review of Borderlands 2 should be up shortly, but in the meantime let us know your initial thoughts!
