Disney Infinity no longer releasing in June

Disney Infinity, Disney's ambitious new gaming initiative combining collectible toys and a digital video game, has been delayed from its previously planned June 2013 launch. The new launch date is August 18 in North America, with the international release in most regions set for August 20. The decision to delay the game's release stems from "opportunity" rather than necessity, with many retailers pushing for an "introduction closer to the all-important holiday season," the NY Times reported.

"We could deliver in June if we wanted to,” Disney Interactive co-president John Pleasants reassured. “Will a two-month timing change help us? Sure, of course. It gives us a little more time to add bells and whistles and make sure it really sings and pops.”

The August release still puts Disney Infinity's launch ahead of its biggest competitor, Skylanders. With the next installment of Activision's hugely popular franchise expected to arrive in stores this fall, the new date still allows Disney Infinity to hit the market first. “We think it’s good to be first and really lean into the most important selling season of the year.”

Disney Infinity clearly borrows some concepts from the Skylanders franchise, mainly the ability to bring collectible toy figurines to life via a video game portal. While the overall concept is similar, Disney Infinity also throws in a Sandbox Mode — called the Toy Box — that lets you create your own unique Disney adventure using the characters, vehicles, upgrades, and gadgets you collect throughout the game.

Disney Infinity will be available on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, Wii, 3DS, and PC, as well as an accompanying mobile experience. Check out the initial trailer and our hands-on impressions here.
