Rumor: Microsoft removing the Xbox One’s strict DRM

There's something brewing over in the Microsoft camp with rumors circulating that the company could be lessening the very unpopular restrictions on the Xbox One.

Rumor has it that many of the Xbox One's restrictions, like always online requirement, 24-hour check-ins, and strict pre-owned game policy, have been removed.

We're still awaiting official word from Microsoft, but they have updated the Xbox One FAQ page. Here's what it says:

Update on June 19, 2013: As a result of feedback from the Xbox community, we have changed certain policies for Xbox One reflected in this blog. Some of this information is no longer accurate — please check here for the latest.

Unfortunately, the link is not working at this time so we have no idea what the policies have been changed to.

In the meantime, here's what GiantBomb says has changed:

  • No more always online requirement
  • The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
  • All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
  • Authentication is no longer necessary
  • An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
  • All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
  • No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
  • Region locks have been dropped
