Some former Obsidian folks have taken to Kickstarter to fund their newest project. The game, titled Steam Bandits: Outpost, is a colorful steampunk city building game. I know "colorful" and "steampunk" seem a bit weird when put in the same sentence, but the developer, Iocaine Studios, is going for style here, and it could very well provide a cheerful and pleasing title.
The coolest thing about Steam Bandits is that it's a free-to-play game, but Iocaine doesn't intend on following the traditional free-to-play model. Rather than forcing players to shell out cash in the form of microtransactions to buy better items or progress further, Steam Bandits has a "pay-to-style" model that allows you to pay cash — if you want to — to buy items that customize your characters and towns in a purely cosmetic fashion.
To make things even sweeter, Iocaine doesn't want people bugging their friends so that they can continue progressing in Steam Bandits. You know, the kind of bullsh*t we always see on Facebook. I swear, if I get another Something-Ville invite from my cousin Juan on Facebook, I'm going to stab myself in the leg.
Honestly, I'm not a fan of all of these wacky free-to-play games seen on the PC and mobile devices, and the reason for that is because of all the crap that I mentioned above. But with Steam Bandits, all of that stuff won't be an issue. Iocaine is trying to deliver a fun and free title that anyone can enjoy — like, actually enjoy.
If that sounds like something you might be interested in, I'd say you should definitely look into it
