Duke Nukem fan Frederik Schreiber has been working on an Unreal Engine 3-powered remake of Duke Nukem 3D. He posted the footage of his Hollywood Holocaust comparisons (below) on the Gearbox forums after the studio announced they had bought the rights to the Duke.
Unlike SquareEnix and Nintendo and pretty much any other company ever, Gearbox did not slap a cease and decist on the amateur modeler, but rather granted him a personal, non-commercial license to the Duke Nukem property.
Duke Nukem: Next Gen is now underway as Schreiber is assembling a team to build a more complete version. Hope it won’t take him long as the last Duke game took to make, but these fan-made remakes are notorious for their slow progression. Upon completion, Duke Nukem NG will be released to the public for free.
Okay, at this point I think we can safely say “Gearbox FTW!”
