Grand Theft Auto V officially released on PC and while it hit a slight snag for Windows users, the game has been pretty successful in its launch. You can find the game on Steam, but what you won't find is anything for GTA V on the Steam Workshop. So, the question remains — can you mod it?
According to ENB Series, no you can not. In their opinion, "Rockstar did everything to prevent modding of GTA5, so at this moment impossible to do anything via editing game files. All my buddies modders share the same opinion."
Rockstar isn't too fond of allowing modding for a game that has online multiplayer. Rockstar's Technical Director Adam Fowler laid out the developers stance on modding in GTA V to TechRadar:
The priority for us is maintaining the integrity of GTA Online and making sure that nothing detracts from that experience. We will be working to protect that environment and making sure nothing has a negative effect on the overall community, but we look forward to seeing and hearing about the experiences PC gamers have once the game is in their hands.
The modding community is not in accordance with ENB Series' statement. If you take a look at GTAForums you'll find that modders do have a way in and that ENB might be jaded from past issues with Rockstar:
The game is NOT locked down. We still have .rpf files that the game is enclosed in, and as soon as someone reverse engineers the game's executable we'll have the "key" to open these files and do what we want. ENB's developer has also been known to post pretty delusional things, such as one post claiming that Rockstar was actively trying to prevent his mods in GTA 4 updates when all they did was change the way shadows worked, which UNINTENTIONALLY broke his mod. He had a hissy fit and has never made a version for GTA 4's later versions, and probably won't be coming back for GTA 5 because of this vendetta against Rockstar.
Let me reiterate: The PS3 and 360 versions of the game were modded to hell and back, and those DO actively try to prevent mods. Why would the game be uncrackable on the best and most open platform of them all? Give it time, it's moddable but not yet. What one guy states isn't gospel.
The last line in that post should be emphasized and expanded upon. Just because one modder says it is not possible and another says it is, doesn't really mean anything.
We don't know if anyone will be able to reverse engineer the file, so for now, stay hopeful and believe in the mods when you see them. For what it's worth, an infinite ammo/invincibility mod/cheat has been released for GTA 5 on PC, but it's not anything major that many fans are actually hoping for.
