Two years ago we first heard about Valve's in-home gaming platform, the Steam Machine. We saw the prototypes and heard about the beta testing, then there was silence (besides the murmuring of theories on forums). During CES 2014 we heard all about Valve's Steam Machine partners: Alienware, Alternate, CyberPower PC, Falcon Northwest, Gigabyte, iBuyPower, Material.net, Next, Scan Computers, Webhallen, and Zotac.
Here we are during CES 2015 and where is Valve's Steam Machine? Well, at some point in 2014 Valve still wasn't sure about the controller design or whether or not Steam OS was ready to be launched (Alienware went ahead and launched a PC 'console' with Steam on it – no Steam OS).
According to NotOperator and their 'multiple sources' that remain un-named, the Steam Machine will be launching this year during the Game Developers Conference (GDC). The conference is taking place in early March, so, their sources are saying that within two months we will be seeing Steam Machines launch. Apparently, the Steam Machine controller design has been finalized and Steam OS is ready to launch. Whether or not Valve's partners will have their Steam Machine builds ready to launch at the same time was not revealed.
It is said that Steam Machines will be priced around $500 in order to compete against the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. An interesting push if that price point holds to be true.
