The Golden Compass – 360 – Preview

E3 2007 Preview

Based on the upcoming fantasy film, The Golden
Compass from SEGA is an action platformer that borrows heavily from the movie,
even including twelve minutes of footage. The game won’t be unfamiliar territory
for anyone who’s played an action platformer, and should be a good investment
for fans of the franchise.

A brief clip of the game showcased some
interesting “vehicular” elements, with your character riding a polar bear. The
polar bear mechanics allow you to attack and throw your enemies around, as well
as navigate through some platforming situations.

Outside of the polar bear areas, the game looked
like a pretty standard platformer, with a few interesting elements. You’ll be
able to use your demon buddy in order to solve puzzle situations. This character
can change into a cat, ferret, bird, and a sloth, and will require you to use
each of these abilities at given moments. For example, the bird ability allows
you to float to the ground and get further when you jump, the cat lets you climb
up certain walls, the sloth lets you grab far away ledges and swing around, and
the ferret allows you to see the playing field farther and will crawl up and
down your shoulders to give you more balance while traversing narrow ledges.

While the game looked fairly simplistic, the
short clip showed a game that will likely appeal to the audience that it’s
geared to, namely fans of the upcoming film and the younger set.
