Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron – PSP – Preview

E3 2007 Preview

Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade
Squadron is a deceptive action-shooter. It’s
labeled a PSP game, but when the demo first booted up and was projected on a
widescreen TV, LucasArts had me completely fooled. The scope of the game is so
much bigger than other action games released for the system. I wasn’t alone in
that thought — another journalist said he thought it was a Wii title. Nope,
this game is a PSP exclusive.

PSP exclusivity means that the
developers can dedicate themselves to making the most impressive handheld
experience possible, which no doubt had played a role in this game’s ability to
reach the level of graphical depth that it has. The gameplay looked similar to
the previous Battlefront games: lots of fast action mixed with a variety of
worlds and play styles. The story takes place during the later chapters when Han
Solo is trying to help Luke save the galaxy from the Dark Side of The Force. Han
apparently hires a few fighters to help him take down the enemy, and that’s who
you’ll get to play as — a skilled soldier who is average in respect to the
original trilogy’s story, but is above average in his combative abilities.

Up to 16 players will be able to
play the game online. Stunned? So was I. Most PSP games have a hard time
reaching four to eight players, and this one is giving us 16. If you have seven
friends within ad hoc vicinity, there’s an eight-player mode that takes
advantage of LAN play as well. No multiplayer battles were shown, but if they
are half as good as the single-player content, you would be crazy not to play
online as soon as possible.

Due for release on October 9, Star
Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron looks to be
the can’t-miss Star Wars game of the season. That is, until LEGO Star Wars: The
Complete Saga is released in November.
