What is one of the most popular comic book
franchises that has spurned a many different comic book universes, several TV
series, action figures, games on several different consoles, and even a couple
of movies? The answer is X-Men, and one of the most popular characters gets a
game of his own. Who is this mystery character, it is none other than the
loveable Wolverine. Does X2: Wolverine’s Revenge have the same feel as the
character people expect him to be, or is he just a washed out wanna be? Read on
to find out!
One of the things that makes Wolverine such an interesting character is his
mysterious background. James Howlett was born into an aristocratic family in the
late nineteenth century. One day his father and mother were brutally murdered in
front of him, and it was at this moment that his mutant powers awakened from
their slumber, forcing three bone claws out of the back of each of his hands.
With an uncountable fury, James exacted revenge and killed his parent’s
murderer. After he did this, he changed his name to Logan and fled to another
place with his love Rose. During this time he developed his other mutant powers
such as a healing factor and animal-like sense, he also earned the nickname
Wolverine for his refusal to back down from a fight. Later on the son of the
murderer confronted Logan, and a fight proceeded. In the end Logan killed the
son, but also impaled Rose with his bone claws.
As time passes Logan does various things with his life, such as join the army
and participate in other world events, while keeping out of the lime light. Many
decades have passed, but Logan still looks to be in his early thirties due to
his healing factor. The government noticed this about Logan and decided to do a
series of tests on him and other mutants. This project was called Weapon X, and
was designed to create the ultimate human weapon. Scientists decided to graft an
indestructible metal, adamantium, to Logan’s skeleton, thus giving him his
legendary adamantium claws. Along with these metal implants, the scientists
erase all of his memories and implant false ones, so they could control him
better. With all that has happened in his life, he is now unable to tell the
false memories from the truth, and he is always pestered by it in the back of
his mind. Logan now stays with Professor X, and the X-Men to help humans and
mutants co-exist together, but it has never been an easy fight. With the help of
Professor X, Logan has gotten many answers to his questions, but every answer
leads him to more questions, so it is a never-ending cycle. One day Beast was
doing some tests on Logan and found a deadly virus, that Logan’s immune system
cannot cure. It is now up to Logan to find the cure for this virus before he is
dead. Can you survive?
X2: Wolverine’s Revenge is an action game that mixes in stealth for good
measure. To help progress in the game, Wolverine has his healing power, but the
only way to activate is by sheathing your claws. Here is the problem, in the
heat of battle you have to sheath the claws to heal, but once without your claws
you won’t deal out that much damage against your enemies. Players will be in
that catch twenty-two many times throughout the game, and this really messes up
the flow of the gameplay.
The controls are really simplistic to learn, which is a good thing, but it
really the action. In the beginning of the game players will only have a few
moves that they can perform, but as they progress through the game they obtain
more. In the end, the amount of moves the player can do is not very varied, and
it makes game really repetitive.
There are a few bonuses that players can find hidden throughout the game, such
as different costumes, dog tag challenges, and other things. This gives the game
a bigger reply factor and makes it more fun to play. It is a fun thing to go
through the game in a classic costume, or hear the biographies of a few of the
characters in X-men.
X2: Wolverine’s Revenge is rated T for Teen for blood and violence. It supports
Custom Sound Tracks, and HDTV 480p support.
Gameplay: 7.2
The camera control is really bothersome and not intelligent at all. A few
times I will be trying to sneak up and do a “stealth strike” and the camera
shifted and than I got caught, so away went any chances for a dog tag. Combine
this problem with the lack of moves that players can perform, and frustration
will ensue.
Graphics: 7.9
X2: Wolverine’s Revenge does not take advantage of Xbox graphical power in
anyway. It is not that this game looks bad, but it could have been a lot better.
The environments feature some destructible items, which is really good since it
adds some realism, and gives it a comic book feel. All of the character models
have a moderate polygonal count and decent texturing, but the Xbox is capable of
more.
Sound: 8.7
It has been a long time since I have played a game that uses the custom
soundtrack option, and it feels nice. The original musical score is great, but
nothing can beat slicing people up to the music of Linkin Park, Blink 182, and
other various artists. The voice-overs are excellent with such high quality
talent behind it.
Difficulty: Easy
The AI is on the slow and dumb side, sometimes they will not fire on you and
just sit there, or do other various things that perplex the mind.
Concept: 7.0

X2: Wolverine’s Revenge
has some of the things that make this genre so popular, but the game does lack
some innovation in comparison to other action games on the market.
Overall: 7.8
Sadly, X2: Wolverine’s Revenge could have been so much more than what it
turned out to be. GenePool Software should have delayed this game a month to
iron out the AI, camera control, and other issues that this game had from time
to time. This still is a fun game to play, but it really isn’t up there with
Spiderman game that has been released. If you do decide to pick this game up,
you will have fun with all of the extras that the developer put in there!
Otherwise at least rent this game to check out the greatness of being one of the
toughest characters in comic book history.
