Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes (2.0 Edition): Ultimate Spider-Man Play Set review

Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes (2.0 Edition) comes with one Play Set — The Avengers. But there’s other Play Sets for the game available at launch to give you even more superhero play time.

One of those Play Sets is Ultimate Spider-Man, allowing you to play as Spidey, Venom, Nova, Nick Fury and Iron Fist. There’s also cross-over characters that can be used in this Play Set as well: Hulk and Iron Man. If you’re a fan of Spider-Man and/or the show, you’ll like this Play Set. It’s Spider-Man… of course you’ll love it. But if you’re looking for something different, look elsewhere.

If you played through the Avengers Play Set, and it came with the Starter Pack so you probably have, then you’ve played Spider-Man. It’s the same exact city. The puzzles in the instanced missions have some different mechanics, and the music is different, but it’s New York City, again. There’s probably no where else you could have placed a Spider-Man Play Set, but for the sake of variety, the location of The Avengers Play Set should have been different then.

Your time in the Spider-Man Play Set will have you facing off against Green Goblin, Mysterio and number of Symbiote enemies. Again, the Symbiote enemies feel like Venom-skins for the ones you already fought in The Avenger Play Set.

It’s not all negativity though. The characters and this world to play in more than make up for it if you can look past it being a clone. Swinging around New York City as Spider-Man feels great. It’s not restricting at all like in other games where you play as Spidey. I played The Amazing Spider-Man 2 video game and the web-slinging travel feels 10 times better than that. Spidey is well-equipped in combat, too. His webs stun and his special will buy you time in a pickle. Combat across all Play Sets are good, though, so I can’t count that as a plus for just the Spider-Man Play Set. Also, the tutorial has a really cool, trippy sequence against Mysterio that I wished more of the Play Set was like.

Playing through the Play Set will, of course, unlock items for you to use in the beloved Toy Box mode. There’s really cool decorations from the Ultimate Spider-Man universe.

To my knowledge, the only way to get Nova and Spider-Man — the two heroes that come with the Play Set — is to buy the Play Set. The figures are well worth it. Nova is awesome and who doesn’t love Spider-Man? Just don’t expect an experience different than the one you already got with The Avengers Play Set.
