Next PS4 system update ‘just around the corner’

Firmware update 2.0 adding Share play

PlayStation 4's next major update, presumably the much-anticipated Firmware 2.0 system update, is "just around the corner," according to PlayStation community manager Fred Dutton. Although Dutton wouldn't comment on any new hardware features in the PS4's pipeline, he did suggest the next update will release soon.

"I can’t comment on new hardware features today, other than to say that update are always in the works – as previously announced there’s a big PS4 update just round the corner that we’ll be talking more about soon," he said.

Back in August, Sony announced Share Play, one of the major features in the PS4's 2.0 update, that will give PS Plus members the power to invite friends to play games with them, even if their friend doesn't actually own the game (similar to what Sony is doing with Ubisoft on Far Cry 4, except without the two-hour limit.)

The update will also add highly requested broadcast and video share features, including both uploading your game play footage and dedicated app support for YouTube, as well as an intuitive friend finder that lets you search for people using their real names. Lastly, the What's New section will get "enhanced real-time activity" through friend-of-friend suggestions, allowing instant access to friends' and recently played games' broadcasts.

Again, we aren't sure when the next PS4 update will release, but hopefully Dutton's "around the corner" means very soon.
