Earlier this week, Green Man Gaming (GMG) offered one of the best deals we had seen for the yet-to-be released game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The deal took 35% off of the game's retail price, putting it at $38.99 instead of $59.99.
The Witcher 3 developers, CD Projekt Red took to their forums in regards to fans excitedly posting about the deal. Apparently, GMG and CD Projekt Red had never struck a deal in regards to game key purchases, making the keys from GMG unofficial.
The developers urged fans to steer clear of the site and its sale.
GMG has come out to comment on the matter at hand. Turns out that no matter how hard GMG tried to procure game keys from the developers, they only wanted to support their own retail platform. GMG had to find other means and they did — through third-party retailers that had been approved by CD Projekt Red.
Green Man Gaming CEO Paul Sulyok spoke with GameSpot on the issue:
“Following a six-month dialogue with [CD Projekt RED] about the launch of The Witcher 3, we were disappointed that despite the offer of significant cash advances, and other opportunities to officially work together, CDPR chose not to engage with a number of significant, reputable, and successful retailers, including ourselves, as they instead focused on supporting their own platform GOG,” said Sulyok.
"We, like millions of customers, are huge fans of The Witcher series, and have been eager for the launch of this amazing title. We believe that CDPR’s desire to support their own platform by working with retail outlets that would not conflict with their own is greater than that of meeting the demands of their audience, therefore we made the decision to indirectly secure the product and deliver it to our customers."
Sulyok is open to crafting a deal with CD Projekt Red, regardless of the issues surrounding the subject, "We would heartily welcome a renewed dialogue with CDPR, and are keen to continue to not only support the launch of The Witcher 3, but to keep celebrating and bringing the whole catalogue of CDPR titles to a worldwide audience, as we have done since 2011."
We can only wait and see how CDPR responds! The deal has since been removed from GMG.
