After admitting they were unable to control the leaked footage, Warner Bros. has officially released the Suicide Squad trailer that was shown during the studio's Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend.
While originally intended to be shown only to those in attendance, someone in the crowd had secretely recorded and posted the trailer online, albeit in horrible quality. After some serious discussion Warner Bros. has decided to publish the trailer in high quality rather than forcing eager fans to resort to watching the poorly filmed pirated version. It's a move Sue Kroll, the studio's president of Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, isn't happy about; but, it's one that had to be made.
“Warner Bros. Pictures and our anti-piracy team have worked tirelessly over the last 48 hours to contain the Suicide Squad footage that was pirated from Hall H on Saturday. We have been unable to achieve that goal. Today we will release the same footage that has been illegally circulating on the web, in the form it was created and high quality with which it was intended to be enjoyed," Kroll said (via Deadline).
"We regret this decision as it was our intention to keep the footage as a unique experience for the Comic Con crowd, but we cannot continue to allow the film to be represented by the poor quality of the pirated footage stolen from our presentation.”
I understand the studio's desire to keep something exclusive to those in attendance, but for something as big as a premiere trailer for a movie as anticipated as Suicide Squad, how can you expect to keep that secret — especially when you went ahead and published the Batman v Superman trailer just minutes after its Comic-Con debut?
Let's be honest, people would still attend Comic-Con, even if a studio published its trailer for the world to see at the same time as it showed during the panel. People aren't going to Comic-Con to see exclusive trailers. They are going there to see the premiere of a trailer and experience it while surrounded by thousands of other fans who share their similar excitement for something.
