Blizzard details the Kanai Cube coming to Diablo 3 in Patch 2.3.0

Get ready for the best item coming to D3

Fans of Diablo 2 know the Horadric Cube very well. This invaluable item allowed players to combine various gems together as well as upgrade items. This cube was absent from Diablo 3, instead opting for players to use various merchants to do the job of the cube. However, in the upcoming Patch 2.3.0, players will get another kind of cube; the Kanai's Cube.

The Kanai's Cube is going to fundamentally change the way you gain Legendary attributes, as well as provide a ton of quality of life options to make the game that much more enjoyable.

For one, you'll be able to free up room in your Stash of those Legendary items you've been hoarding, since the Kanai's Cube will extract those Legendary attributes that you can equip, without the item. Those Legendary attributes will simply serve as passives. You'll be able to equip a Legendary passive in one of three slots, weapons, armor and jewelry. But the Cube does so much more. Check out the full list below.

  • Extract Legendary Power: Destroy an item to add its Legendary power to your catalogue of collected powers. Once a power has been extracted, it can be equipped to your character without the need to equip the item. Players may have one Weapon, one Armor, and one Jewelry power equipped at a time. Players may only equip powers from items that their characters can normally equip and use.
  • Reforge a Legendary Item: Completely re-rolls a Legendary item as though it had dropped for the first time. This includes any powers that may have been previously enchanted on the item. Note that reforged items may re-roll as either Ancient or non-Ancient, so reforge at your own discretion!
  • Upgrade Rare Item: Upgrades the quality of a level 70 Rare item to Legendary. This item will roll as a randomized Legendary that shares that item's equipment type.
  • Convert Set Item: Converts a Set item to a randomized piece of gear from the same Set. For example, if you convert a pair of Asheara's Finders, you could get Asheara's CustodianAsheara's Pace, or Asheara's Ward in return.
  • Remove Level Requirement: Removes the level requirement from an item, allowing it to be equipped by a character of any level.
  • Convert Gems: Converts 9 of any color gem to 9 of any other color.
  • Convert Crafting Materials: Converts 100 normal, magic, or rare Crafting Materials to 100 of another type of non-legendary Crafting Material

The Kanai's Cube will be joined with an entirely new zone, the Ruins of Sescheron, new Torment difficulty as well as a Season tracker for those playing the PC version.

The one thing Blizzard didn't reveal was the release date of Patch 2.3.0, which means we'll have to be patient for just a bit longer. However, impatient players on the PC can access the PTR servers to give it a spin.

Blizzard also revealed that Kanai's Cube was named after Kevin Kanai Griffith, an artist who joined the World of Warcraft team in 2005 and worked on titles like Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King and Mists of Pandaria expansions.

In 2012, Kevin was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer (ASPS) and ended up passing away two years later in October of 2014. Blizzard is immortalizing their colleague by naming the Cube after him, and thus keeping his spirit alive.
