YouTube unveils ad-free subscription service, YouTube Red

Watch YouTube videos without ads for $9.99 a month

As expected, Google has unveiled a new subscription service that removes ads from popular video streaming website YouTube.

Officially dubbed "YouTube Red," the subscription service, which launches October 28th, will charge members $9.99 a month to remove ads before videos. Also included with a membership is the ability to save videos to watch offline on your phone or tablet and play videos in the background. The membership extends across devices and anywhere you sign into YouTube.

Looking ahead to early next year, YouTube Red will also offer member-only access to new, original shows and movies "from some of YouTube's biggest creators." YouTube announced some of these original series today.

Google assures that the free, ad-supported version of YouTube isn't going anywhere. "You’ll still be able to enjoy YouTube, along with the YouTube Kids, Gaming and Music apps free of charge. But with YouTube Red, you’ll be able to support the people who make your favorite videos while watching what you want, when you want, on any device you want, uninterrupted," the company said.

A free one month trial to YouTube Red will be offered to viewers in the U.S. on October 28th.
