Jonathan Blow's upcoming puzzle game The Witness is said to take a different approach to storytelling, relying more on subtle details and clues found while exploring the mysterious island you're plopped into. While the game does make use of the traditional ement of classic audio logs, it offers a unique spin on them, according to Blow.
"The Witness has recordings like this, but let’s just say they are done in a highly non-traditional way. When you first encounter them you won’t find much in the way of answers, but, if you keep looking, you will eventually be able to piece together what’s going on," Blow teased in his latest PlayStation Blog post.
So who will you be hearing on these audio logs?
Blow posted a list of the voice actors involved in the game. Headlining the impressive list is Ashley Johnson, who you may know as Ellie from The Last of Us, or from Tales from the Borderlands, or from Infamous: First Light. Also lending their talents are Phil LaMarr (Marvin from Pulp Fiction, Vamp in MGS 2 and 4), Matthew Waterson (Sir Lucan in The Order: 1886), and Terra Deva, an of-performing musician and veteran of The Mickey Mouse Club.
Despite having the talent of The Last of Us, Blow warned to not expect traditional game story like The Last of Us or The Order. "I will warn you, though, that the story in The Witness, such as it is, is fairly subtle and happens most implicitly," Blow said. "You really have to explore and read between the lines to know what's going on."
The Witness is set to release on January 26, 2016, for PS4, PC, and iOS devices.
