ESPN launches new eSports vertical

Company takes first real stride in accepting gaming as a sport

ESPN has confirmed that they will cover eSports news moving into the future, opening a section on their official website and launching a new Twitter page.

There is certainly a growing demand in gaming news, especially eSports, and despite recent attempts to play down the credibility of this type of competition it seems ESPN are serious this time around. Perhaps it's because ESPN is hemorrhaging money as a result of poor financial decisions and a massive drop in cable subscribers over the past few years.

The global news company announced details of this launch today while the editor-in-chief of ESPN.com, Chad Millman, said the following: “Today’s launch – anchored by the influential voices of Darin Kwilinski, Rod Breslau and Tyler Erzberger – is our latest push to reach and connect with this growing and passionate audience,”

“Fans will find the same level of quality content and journalism that users of ESPN.com have come to expect, including in-depth looks at the competitive gaming world and on-site reporting from the major tournaments."

Website content over the next week will reportedly include news on the state of eSports, profile pieces on gamers that have made eSports what it is today and much more.

Three well-established members of the eSports community will be joining the ESPN team, including Darin Kwilinski as role of editor, with Rod Breslau and Tyler Erzberger deployed in writing posts.
