Universal delays Tom Cruise’s ‘The Mummy’ reboot

The Mummy reboot will now go up against Divergent: Ascendant and World War Z's sequel

Amidst all the movie shuffling from yesterday, Universal has set a new release date for The Mummy reboot, starring Tom Cruise.

Originally slated for March 24, 2017, the reboot has been delayed by a few months to June 9, 2017. It will now go up against Lionsgate/Summit's Ascendant, the next installment in the Divergent series, and the Paramount's sequel to World War Z — both releasing the same day.

Jon Spaihts (Promethus) is penning the script for The Mummy reboot, which will be set in present day, unlike the original trilogy which starred Brendan Fraser. Alex Kurtzman is on board to direct and produce, with Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious series) and Sean Daniel (The Mummy trilogy) also producing.

Tom Cruise star in the film, with Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) as the "monster" villain.
