Filming for the Assassin's Creed movie officially wrapped up last month, putting the film into the post-production phase. Since then, Assassin's Creed producer and star Michael Fassbender has opened up about the film saying that the movie's plotline always felt kind of like The Matrix to him.
"I’ve always thought about The Matrix when we’ve approached this," said Fassbender in an interview with Empire. "This idea of DNA memory elevates it from a basic fantasy genre [piece], because you have something an audience can actually believe in. Then the journey becomes so much more elevated, because you’re on board in a different way."
Unlike The Matrix, there won't be that much green screen in Assassin's Creed. The stunts and effects are being done by real people with tons of courage.
"There’s very little green screen in this, which is highly unusual in these films," he explained. "We have stunt guys jumping across buildings in [Maltese capital] Valletta. We’ve got [stunt man] Damian Walters doing a 120-foot leap of faith, without any rope, into a bag, so it’s pretty incredible to see."
Although the movie is based on Ubisoft's iconic video game franchise of the same name, Fassbender will actually be playing a character created specifically for the film version — Callum Lynch. The movie isn't a retelling of the existing Assassin's Creed games, but instead plays off the same concept while itnroducing new characters into the same world.
"Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day."
Unlike the games, also, the movie won't be "crazy violent," according to Fassbender.
“We’re not trying to make it too crazy violent,” said Fassbender, “although obviously there is an element of that, but what is really cool is that our action sequences are on real sets and real locations.”
Assassin's Creed is set to release on December 21st in the USA, followed by a worldwide release on December 26th, 2016.
