While director Paul Feig and company have kept much of the new Ghostbusters movie a mystery, the studio released its first teaser last week. Promising a full trailer in March, the gritty teaser showcased United States military lining up to take on what we can only assume will be a major threat.
During New York's Toy Fair, toymaker Mattel had on display various merchandise associated with Sony's upcoming reboot, giving us an idea of just what sort of threat these new Ghostbusters will be facing. It's going to be big.
On display alongside the already revealed action-figures was giant white ghost bearing a striking resemblance to the classic Ghostbusters logo (which has been updated slightly for the new movie). As confirmed by Mattel (via Pixeldan), this is "Rowan," and he serves as the main villain in the movie. Beyond that, everything else is still a mystery, though it's worth pointing out the full toy will not be available for purchase; rather, the character will be divided into four parts that will come included with each of the four Ghostbusters figures that comprise the new team. Once you collect all four, you can build Rowan.
It's interesting that Sony and Feig would create a villain in the form of the movie's logo since it was never used for more than that in the originals. By taking down this behemoth ghost, it's possible this is where the new squad could get inspiration for their own logo, which would be kind of neat.
And while Mattel says this is the "main villain" in the film, I would not be surprised if this were a red herring. Based on his overall, with his cute little bow tie, Rowan seems more fit as a puppet, perhaps summoned by a more powerful spirit. I wouldn't be surprised to see him used in a similar way to the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man in the original film. I have a sneaking suspicion there's a bigger threat that looms.
In addition to Rowan, Mattel also had on display a series of other ghostly villains, including a villain named "Mayhem," as well as a collection fo smaller "Ecto Minis" — a pack of three ghosts. Interestingly, one of the Ecto Mini ghosts looks like Slimer from the original film.
