Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare has non-linear Side Missions

Go cause chaos in your new jet!

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare only just got announced today but it's already proving to be the most ambitious title in the insanely popular first-person shooter series.

In an interview with IGN, design director Jacob Minkoff let us know that Infinite Warfare's campaign goes beyond the typical linear, cinematic story that we are used to when it comes to Call of Duty. Rest assured, while that storytelling we have come to know and love is still there, Infinite Warfare will have completely separate non-linear side missions. "As the captain of the UNSA Retribution, which is the carrier that you command, you can order it to go and engage in different missions in a non-linear order."

Minkoff went on to explain that it's completely optional, but you will be rewarded with more story and gameplay rewards.

"We are telling a linear story, but along the way you can choose to attack targets of opportunity, and attacking those targets of opportunity will reward you with various items and progression and loot elements that will help you to accomplish the next main mission that you accept from command," he added, noting they "will also reveal optional elements of the story."

This isn't the first time the series has had side missions however. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 had a similar mode inside the campaign that would allow players to defend outposts or bases. And depending on when players ignored, failed, or successfully completed the mission, the story would change allowing for everyone to experience the game a bit differently.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare releases November 4th, 2016 and all collectors editions will come bundled with a Remastered version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
