Donald Glover has just been cast in the upcoming 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' for Marvel Studios.
Many might remember, before 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man, the casting process for the first person to don the mantle of the famed web-slinger since Tobey Maguire was well underway. Before the shortlist was released, fans began petitioning for a non-traditional change to the mythos and campaigned for their own choice for Spider-Man, 'Community' star, Donald Glover.
There was very divided public opinion, some being all for the change, trending #DonaldforSpiderMan, and some…not so much, considering Glover is African-American, unlike Peter Parker in the comics. The controversy not withstanding, British actor, Andrew Garfield, was eventually cast in the role, but the fan support remained unchanged. Marvel Comics themselves even acknowledged the trend by creating an African-American version of Spider-Man named Miles Morales, who was in fact modeled after Glover.
Ever since the new addition to the comics, Miles Morales has been a popular character that has resonated with fans, with Donald Glover himself actually voicing the character in a few episodes of the animated series, Ultimate Spider-Man. Recently, it was announced that he has now been cast in Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Homecoming. With Tom Holland reprising his role as Spider-Man from Captain America: Civil War, there's some speculation as to who he'll be playing. It's possible he could be just a side character, acting as nothing more than a shoutout to everyone's hopes for the character, but the possibilty of the real Morales storyline (meaning TWO Spider-Men in one movie!) being featured or set up for a future project is not necessarily out the window. His role in the picture is still to be announced, but until then, we'll have to wait for more concrete announcements.
