Gamescom 2016: Check out 15 minutes of combat gameplay from The Surge

Fans of Souls gameplay should check out The Surge

The Surge is the newest game from developer Deck13, makers of Lords of the Fallen, a game that in many respects borrowed liberally from the Dark Souls series. The Surge definitely wears its Souls influences on its sleeves, albeit in a different kind of world. Instead of gothic horror, The Surge introduces an all new dystopian Sci-Fi world. Where The Surge attempts to innovate is a system inspired by the Dead Space series, where targeting limbs can deal increased damage and unlock devastating combination attacks.

The Surge also employs a Metroidvania philosophy in regards to its levels, as everything is built to be interconnected and new areas are unlocked once the player has upgraded their core power to be able to overcharge doors and locks.

As you go through the game, you will unlock blueprints and collect tech-scrap which will let the player craft new exo-suits and weapons that you find salvaged throughout the game world. Some of the most powerful items will be salvaged from the game's many mechanical bosses, each of which will have multiple methods of being defeated.

It's clear that Deck13 is attempting to learn from the mistakes of the past made with Lords of the Fallen, and are taking inspiration from a variety of great sources to create a game that's looking really solid from the video above. The Surge will release on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 sometime in 2017.
