Stephen Lang hasn’t ruled out playing Cable in ‘Deadpool 2’

Will the fan campaign be enough to keep him in the running?

Actor Stephen Lang responds to the overwhelming fan campaign to cast him as Cable in 'Deadpool 2'.

In a recent interview with Mashable, actor Stephen Lang, fresh off his latest suspense thriller, 'Dont' Breathe', was asked about his experience playing a blind man in the film and what his future holds with the highly anticipated 'Avatar' franchise. While on the subject of his future roles, the matter of the sequel to this years smash hit superhero comedy, 'Deadpool', arose.

If you've fallen out of the loop, the end credits scene depicted the titular anti-hero in a parody of the famous post-credits scene in 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off', where he revealed that a sequel was not only already in the works, but was set to feature the time-traveling mutant, Cable. Ever since the news sprung, fans have been pleading with the studio to cast gruff and tough Stephen Lang in the role, to which he has been in full support of. Lang had this to say:

"Oh sure, I was a fan of the first 'Deadpool' and I'd be delighted to be a part of that sequel, but I haven’t spoken to anyone about it. It kept cropping up on the internet that I should play Cable. The extent of what I did was, one day I was in the gym and I tweeted, "let's lay some Cable," and that became construed as my campaign for the part. Even now, if someone does fan art, I'll retweet it because I like keeping it alive. It's the same studio as 'Avatar', but I don’t know if that makes it easier or more difficult logistically. Either way, no one has approached me, and I can’t even say if I’m in the actual conversation. But they must be aware of it, because whoever makes those decisions must be aware of everything. Plus, I think I'd do a pretty bang-up job with the part. Having said that, understand that my obligation is to the largest, most successful film ever made, so 'Avatar' takes precedence."

While the 'Avatar' series seems to be taking priority, especially considering its the only one of the two roles that's been confirmed, Lang has been an avid promoter of fans' wishes to have him portray Cable. Considering how lucrative 'Deadpool' was with FOX finally having listened to the fans, delivering exactly was was asked, maybe they'll keep that tradition going and give Lang the part he was born to play.
