Ecco the Dolphin was a beloved classic in the days of the Sega Mega Drive. With a couple of less-than-successful sequels after the initial 1992 release, Ecco the Dolphin never quite hit the same stride that it had. But in the past few years, we've come to find the reason.
According to VentureBeat Ecco the Dolphin creator, Ed Annunziata has recently settled a lawsuit with Sega in regards to the ownership of the franchise. In 2013, Annunziata attempted to Kickstart a spiritual successor to Echo the Dolphin under the name The Big Blue. The project failed to meet its goal and was never funded, possibly due to the lack of name recognition.
Since then, Annunziata is now able to relaunch the project with the Ecco name attached thanks to the settlement that was reached. The details are slim, but the classic could very well return from the depths after so long of being absent.
