Many comic book fans are excited to see Iron Fist on Netflix, but we've recently learned that Danny Rand won't be pulling on that green-and-yellow costume right away, if at all during the first season.
Showrunner Scott Buck revealed in an interview with SFX Magazine, "There was no good reason we could imagine to put Danny Rand in a costume. Because Danny Rand is still discovering who he is as a hero and where he is going to be, so he’s not yet ready to put on a mask or a costume.”
While Iron Fist is a great Marvel character, not many people know his origin story, so a slow climb to super hero-dom may prove to be the better direction anyway, and makes the payoff of an eventual costume in a future season that much more satisfying.
Danny Rand, AKA Iron Fist, is a billionaire, so a mask would eventually be a requirement to hide his identity, but the Netflix original apparently has another story to tell before that comes into question. Instead, they focus more on the mystical aspect of Danny's powers and approach them in a way that would make sense for the Marvel cinematic universe. " “We’re trying to keep things extremely grounded and real and tell our stories through characters. So the mystical aspect is something we like to hint at, the idea that there is something bigger and larger out there, but we don’t delve into it all that deeply.”
We do know that the show will tie itself to the Defenders. The show will release on Netflix March 17.
