DIRT – Origin of the Species – PC – Preview

Origins
of the Species is an action/adventure game that will try to incorporate some new
and different ideas.  The story revolves around a military experiment that goes
wrong.  The military was testing a viral weapon that turns normal insects into
mutated freaks.  The military wants to use the mutated insects as new soldiers
in the military.  Unfortunately something goes wrong with the experiment and the
insects start to invade nearby towns and locations.  It’s up to you to eliminate
the insects and determine what really going on with the experiment.

The game is presented in a
3rd person perspective.  The camera system during the demo shown was
always right behind your character.  There was no mention if the camera can be
controlled or will in a static setting.  The graphics during the demo shown were
detailed, with smooth animation for your character and the insects.  The
locations shown were also detailed and smooth with the location shown taking
place in city streets.  There was an occasional slow down during the demo but
this should be correct by the time of the game’s release later this year.

The developers have
included an option called RPG Lite within the game that allows you to decide how
you will complete each level.  You can choose a more aggressive approach for the
level or choose a more subdued, stealth approach for finishing the level.
Depending on the approach you choose, you’re rewarded based on how the level was
completed.  Another interesting aspect of the game is a risk vs. rewards
system.  Rescuing different NPCs in the game will impact the story during the
entire length of the game.

The game will include up to
10 different moves that your character can use during the game.  The video shown
by the developer had the character ducking behind a crate while still firing
your gun(s) at the creatures in the game.  Another move had the character using
telekinesis powers to throw boxes towards the enemies.  All of the moves shown
were spectacular, entertaining and added to the overall “WOW” effect to the
game.

Origins of the Species is
coming together to be a nice surprise for action adventure fans.  For gamers
disappointed in the downturn in the Lara Croft series should pay close attention
to this game.  The female lead character should have enough spunk and attitude
for Tomb Raider fans.  But for the rest of the us, the gameplay should more than
pass the test.  The great graphics, variety of moves, and unique gameplay
elements should add to a great game.  Look for the game later in 2004.
