PlayStation Trophies Can Now Earn You Real Dollars! (Well, More Like Chump Change)

Years of gaming have prepared us for this...

Remember when people would brag about their Gamerscore on Xbox? Or their Trophy score on PlayStation? What about people joking about trading their Reddit Karma score in for a cozy house on the water? We'd all laugh and sarcastically agree. Well, who's laughing now?

Okay, cool your game controllers, you can't retire just yet. But Kotaku actually found a page on the Sony Rewards Passes website that mentions earning points by unlocking silver, gold, and platinum trophies in games.

Here's what it reads:

  • 1 point per silver trophy
  • 10 points per gold trophy
  • 100 points per platinum trophy

So, collect 1,000 points and you can claim a whopping… $10 PSN voucher. While it doesn't sound like much, you're still getting free money for playing video games accessively. Remember though, you need to sign up for the Sony Rewards program and link it to your console to make it count.

Feeling unimpressed? Here's a real-life example of someone who could potentially win big. PSN user Roughdaw4 has the highest trophy count of 15,511 silver, 6,903 gold, and 1.359 platinum. If they were to redeem all of these trophies at the rate mentioned above, they would earn $1,583. Granted, that's the highest trophy count on all of the PlayStation Network. But still, that's free money for a hobby, which is nothing to sneeze at.

This program appears to be for the US market only, at least for now. But in related news, Xbox boss Phil Spencer actually commented on this discovery. As a humble rival, he actually praised Sony for their new program. "Sounds like a cool feature, I'm going to give it a try. Competition is a good thing," he said. "Keeps us all working hard."

The guy in charge of the go-to competitive shooter console praising the competitive nature of his competitor? Well, I never!
