It was made official today that Disney has entered an agreement with 21st Century Fox to acquire a number of studios from Fox, as well as additional properties. While the excitement around the possibility of X-Men and Avengers crossing over or opportunity of Fantastic Four finally getting a good film has left a positive spin on the acquisition, there have been some concerns.
One of the main concerns is how Disney will treat R-rated films, specifically the delightfully R-rated Marvel film Deadpool. According to Disney's CEO Bob Iger, Deadpool is safe.
"It [Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool," said Iger. "As long as we let the audiences know what's coming, we think we can manage that fine."
Outside of Deadpool, Fox's other Marvel branded R-rated film was Logan. The more serious tone of Logan was a pleasant surprise and shift in comparison to a majority of superhero films and was seen as a critical success.
Hopefully Disney sees this tone shift as a something they would like to include in their film portfolio in the future.
