As a publisher, Activision has seen an amazing year with the release of and Destiny 2. The games have been named the top two selling console games in North America (based on revenue), with Call of Duty: WWII being number one and being number 2. In addition to that, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is the top-selling remastered collection that the PlayStation 4 has seen.
“Call of Duty: WWII is the #1 top grossing console game of the year in North America, and Destiny 2 is #2,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision in a press release. “That means Call of Duty has been the #1 top grossing console gaming franchise in North America for a staggering nine years in a row, and worldwide eight out of the last nine years. Thank you to our players for your incredible passion and engagement. And thank you to our talented, committed teams all across the globe that make incredible results like this happen.”
Since release, Call of Duty: WWII has managed to surpass $1 billion in global sales and has become the biggest console digital launch that Activision has seen. Call of Duty: WWII was noted as being the best selling game of the year in physical sales alone, by the NPD. The game, developed by Sledgehammer, has seen the most purchases since the release of Black Ops 2.
As for Destiny 2, the sequel has outsold the original Destiny, which had been hailed as the ‘biggest new video game IP launch in history.’ Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy has been one of the top selling PS4 games in the United States month after month since release.
It’s safe to say the Activision invested in the right games this year and will likely be pursuing similar success next year (it’s garaunteed that there will be another Call of Duty in the future). The question is, which game will Activision remaster next?
