The Surge went relatively quietly into the night during the incredible year that was 2017, which was a shame, as the game proved to be more than just a simple Souls clone. Apparently, the game has accrued a large enough following that publisher Focus Home Interactive and developer Deck 13 have announced plans that they are moving forward with a sequel.
In a press release sent out earlier today, The Surge 2 was announced with a 2019 release window for both PC and consoles. The announcement didn’t specify which consoles specifically, so it’s unclear if the Nintendo Switch will be getting the game alongside PS4 and Xbox One.
The Surge 2 will maintain all of the series’ core combat systems from the original game, namely the limb-cutting system, but will look to expand upon the game’s offerings in different ways. The Surge 2 will take place in a new environment, “a sprawling, devastated city with larger and more ambitious level design” according to the Press Release.
The original game took place within a factory, and its level design was all about unlocking shortcuts to new areas in clever ways, so the idea that Deck13 will be applying the same principles to a much larger space is a very enticing prospect. Combat will also be expanded with “an expanded limb targeting system” as well as new abilities, weapons, implants, and drones that players can leverage against a slew of new enemy types.
More information about The Surge will be revealed at the French press event Le What’s Next de Focus in Paris, so stay tuned for more.
