Nintendo addresses Mario’s lack of belly button, says Toad’s cap is his head

About that Toad bit...

The first trailer for the Nintendo Switch exclusive Super Mario Odyssey kicked off a fiasco over Mario’s exposed nipples and lack of belly button. Well, Nintendo has finally commented on it and answered whether Toad’s cap is a hat or his head at the same time.

The producer of Super Mario Odyssey, Yoshiaki Koizuma, sat down and answered some hard-hitting fan questions.

On the subject of the fan focus on Mario’s nipples and lack of belly button:

“Well, to be perfectly honest, I didn’t really expect that to be a topic among fans. Once I heard that people were talking so much about Mario’s belly button, it made me start to think about whether we should revisit the topic on the design side.”

Last we heard, the theories for Toad’s cap being an actual hat had gained some ground in the debate of whether the cap is a hat or Toad’s head.

“So that, as it turns out… is actually Toad’s head. I’m going to have to leave it to all of you to figure out exactly how that works. Maybe there’s something inside…”

On the subject of Toad, Nintendo once said that Toad isn’t even a humanoid mushroom, despite being from Mushroom Kingdom. Oh, and all Toad-like folk are genderless non-mushroom things.
