Last week, one of the biggest leaks in recent memory happened. Walmart Canada leaked a bunch of major unannounced games that will presumably be announced at E3. Some people dismissed it because there were games on there like Rage 2 and that just doesn’t seem like a sequel that would happen in 2018… but believe it or not, it’s happening.
After that leak, Bethesda started poking fun on Twitter and teasing the unannounced Rage 2 on Twitter via various teaser images and jokes. After a week of all these teases, Bethesda is finally ready to pull back the curtain on the post-apocalyptic Mad Max-esque sequel.
Today Bethesda officially revealed Rage 2 with a trailer which had already leaked a few hours prior. The trailer doesn’t feature anything in-game so don’t get too excited but Bethesda will release a full gameplay reveal tomorrow.
For those unaware of Rage, it was a bloody and somewhat over the top FPS from 2011 that took heavy inspiration from Mad Max, Borderlands, and Bethesda’s own Fallout. The game received decent scores but was by no means a critical darling so it is a bit shocking to see Bethesda doubling down on this series seven years later but we have faith in them to deliver another epic shooter following Doom and Wolfenstein!
All we know about the sequel at the moment is that it’s being developed by id Software as expected but they’re also partnering with Mad Max and Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios. It’s not clear who is handling what but if we were to speculate, we’d say id Software is focusing mostly on the core gameplay such as gunplay and Avalanche is honing their storytelling skills, open world expertise, and potentially vehicle combat knowledge to create something really cool.
While Walmart Canada has said that their leak is speculative, no one was speculating Rage 2 so this may ultimately confirm that games like Borderlands 3, Splinter Cell, Assassin’s Creed, Gears of War 5, Just Cause 4 and more will be revealed at E3. It may truly be speculative but Walmart was tipped off by Bethesda since their reveal was planned for this month (unless the leak forced their hand). Only time will tell and we won’t have to wait long to find out.
Come back to GameZone tomorrow for Rage 2’s gameplay debut.
