TGA 2018: The Outer Worlds is Obsidian’s new RPG made by Fallout devs

Try not to break it

Fans of Obsidian weren’t disappointed at last night’s The Game Awards show when non other than the original creators of the Fallout franchise stepped on the stage and announced their brand-new sci-fi RPG. The Outer Worlds is Obsidian’s newest first-person action-RPG set in a futuristic space setting. Check out the announcement trailer!

After first learning of Obsidian doing a new game in partnership with Private Division a year ago, news regarding the new project stopped pretty much entirely. With very little details known and radio-silence by the dev and publisher, speculation took over.

With the inclusion of legendary developers and creators of the original Fallout games behind the project and teases on Obsidian’s cult RPG Fallout: New Vegas, it looked like whatever was cooking behind closed doors, was going to be a big one.

With today’s announcement, we know a whole lot more and previous guesswork seems like a bullseye. The fun trailer for The Outer Worlds depicts a unique and distinct world, reminding us quite a bit of 3D Fallout games. From a first-person view, we get a glimpse of a rich world with a deep lore to it. A highlight that stands out is the humor in which Obsidian is packaging the action-RPG. We wouldn’t want it any other way from the RPG powerhouse either way.

As a newly awoken colonist to the outer reaches of the galaxy, our protagonist finds himself in the midst of various factions all vying for control over the fate of the colony. Powerful corporations and criminals alike. It’ll be up to the player to save the remaining colonists still in hibernation and decide the story and fate of the frontier.

The Outer World’s setting is a perfect mix of Wild West meets space exploration. Settlements feel right out of a cowboy setting but with a twist of modern equipment, weapons and alien life. Not all friendly.

Private Division aims for a 2019/early 2020 release date for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
