We’re about to hit the Call of Duty marketing cycle but as always, the leaks are coming. This year’s entry in the shooter franchise will come from Treyarch, the creators of World at War and the Black Ops series.
As expected, Treyarch will reportedly release a new Black Ops game this fall but it won’t be “Black Ops 5” per se. The well-regarded developer will be taking us back to the start via the Cold War. Apparently, the game is also titled “Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War” according to Eurogamer and a well-known CoD insider.
Fans will remember that the first Black Ops in 2010 dabbled in the Cold War and Vietnam War already. It’s unclear if this will be another side of that story we’ve already seen or if we’re going to see a full-blown “reimagining” following Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
To add more weight to these rumors, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Warzone mode has been updated with teases for the upcoming reveal. Since launch, there have been various interactive objects on the map such as phones, computers, and old keypads for locked bunkers.
The newest update allows you to find keycards that unlock the bunkers which reveals tons of valuable loot inside. But, there’s more to it than that. There are more locked doors in these bunkers and glitchers have discovered Cold War-era spy planes and other various things that will no doubt tie-in to the new Black Ops title.
It’s unclear when the new Call of Duty will be revealed but we’d place bets at the end of May or in early June. Sony is allegedly planning a PlayStation 5 event to showcase their line-up for the next-gen console on or around June 4th. With Sony having marketing rights to the series, this would make it the best place to debut the title.
