Sony Remains Stubborn About PlayStation 3 Price Cut

The price of the PS3 has been a point of contention among gamers and businessmen alike ever since it was released. Continuing the conflict, building pressure from third party developers has reached the point in which the President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA), Jack Tretton, needed to make a statement regarding the price of the PS3… again.

Tretton said, “I can’t remember a day that people who have no stake in the profitability of our company have not called for a price cut. I think everybody but us would love to see it given away for free…we’ll do everything we can do to make our pricing relevant. But remember cheapest isn’t always the most successful. It’s what you get for your dollar.” Third parties probably aren’t surprised at the response, since Sony hasn’t had a price drop since 2007, and even that was temporary.

Rumors of a $100 price drop for the PS3 have increased over the past few months leading up to E3, with many hoping the announcement would be made at the big event. It’s understandable why third party developers are stepping up the pressure on Sony about the PS3 price, since the PS3 has consistently been at the bottom of the NPD console sales charts for some time.
