BBC’s television series Watchdog has been hot on the trail of Microsoft Co. recently. According to them, there has been a heft number consumer reports regarding faulty Xbox 360 hardware. The issues are apparently occurring soon after Microsoft’s limited manufacturer warranty has expired.
Around 250 complaints were received by the show relating to the faulty consoles. Two unfortunate console owners had to cash out nearly $160 each to have the issues resolved. According to show presenter Nicky Campbell, “Most people who have an Xbox 360 have an outstanding experience and there’s no common fault. Each incident is unique, and looked at on a case by case basis.” The company is claimed to have had even more problems in the US.
The issues are not necessarily focused around the faulty Xbox 360s themselves, but the fact that the consoles are having internal problems so soon after the initial launch (just over a year). While unfortunate, it is a commonly reoccurring theme in the electronics industry. In fact, many electronic and business retailers capitalize on this fact by attempting to sell protection plans and extra service guarantees to the consumer. It will be very interesting to see just how many consoles are in need of repair this time next year.
