EA announced today that it would be providing a new multiplayer mode for it’s upcoming The Godfather II, available by a downloadable patch immediately upon release. Not content with only exciting gamers, EA also made an offer that can’t be refused: this will be a free download. This announcement will surely add fuel to the fire of the ongoing debate of Capcom’s decision to charge for the additional downloadable multiplayer mode for Resident Evil 5. Not only that, but by introducing this new mode on top of four previous multiplayer modes and an open-world game, EA has made Capcom’s argument for their fee look like a load of BS.
The new mode, dubbed Don Control, “takes the ‘Think Like a Don’ strategic gameplay into an online environment and allows players to build a family, command them in battle and view the action from a bird’s eye view above.” EA says that players can challenge up to 16 other online players for their single player currency. As Don, players can also recruit other players to their family by cutting them in on their share of the moolah, which to me, sounds like the best part of this whole mode. If the Don loses the battle, the wager of currency they placed will be deducted from their single player game, which can ultimately result in an empire in shambles, if you aren’t careful.
Don Control sounds pretty neat, I’m particularly fond of the idea of your multiplayer sessions having “real world” ramifications on your single player game. It sort of makes the whole game one cohesive experience, rather than a separation of single player and multiplayer, like most games. The Godfather II hits stores April 7th in the US, and April 10th in Europe.
