New Details on Modern Warfare 2

Last night, Infinity Ward held an event in New York to answer some questions and reveal some information about their blockbuster, first person shooter, Modern Warfare 2.

Of course, the first issue addressed was the name of the game. Infinity Ward has confirmed that the “Call of Duty” name is appearing only on the box of the standard $60 edition of the game, not on the two premium editions. This makes sense. If you are buying the premium edition, you are well aware of what game you are purchasing. Whereas, people who are unaware of the game’s existence may pick it up when they see “Call of Duty” on the shelf at GameStop. Also, just to clarify, the game will officially be called “Modern Warfare 2.” I’m glad that is settled.

One of the big criticisms of the first Modern Warfare was the enemy AI system. Basically, there were points when the game would not stop throwing enemies at you until you reached a certain checkpoint. This is not the case in Modern Warfare 2. The AI is more “dynamic.” Players will see enemies use strategies that are much more elaborate than flanking or covering. According to Infinity Ward, players won’t be able to count on enemies being in the same place each time they play a particular level.

Infinity Ward felt that co-op couldn’t fit properly into the main story line so they developed a set of co-op missions that will be separate from the game’s single-player campaign. This set of missions will be called Special Ops mode and is expected to be just as long as the single-player campaign. How long is this exactly? Infinity Ward has said they haven’t determined the exact length of the game yet.

Modern Warfare 2 will be released on November 10 for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. An Activision rep at the event went on record saying there are no plans to release a Wii version of the game.
