Resident Evil 5: Lost in Nightmares

Kombo’s Review Policy: Our reviews are written for you. Our goal is to write honest, to-the-point reviews that don’t waste your time. This is why we’ve split our reviews into four sections: What the Game’s About, What’s Hot, What’s Not and Final Word, so that you can easily find the information you want from our reviews.

What the Game’s About
Even though this addition arrives almost a year later, Resident Evil 5: Lost in Nightmares is one of the few DLC packs that feels more like a Director’s Cut than simply additional content. Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine return to the Spencer Estate, from the original Resident Evil, to complete some unfinished business. It might technically be larger than the original, but claustrophobic hallways and the suspense that fills the atmosphere of the estate maintain its creepy vibe.

What’s Hot
LIN will put you through some tough challenges. These rough spots include killing deformed tests subjects and even coming across the infamous Wesker, who still dodges bullets like crazy. Jill Valentine is a sight for sore eyes (and ears). She’s not as annoying as Sheva, who continuously declares, “I need ammo!” What really works about LIN is the return to the Spencer Estate. It will trigger the not-too-distant nostalgia of the first Resident Evil game. Ah, the memories.

Now, of course, the included new puzzles will work to tie your brain in knots, whether it’s finding a key to open a door or getting your partner out of some random trap. You will also come across a lot of intel that wasn’t shared in the main storyline. Remember to read every document; you’ll enjoy it and it all works to bring you one step closer to finding the truth of what actually happened to Jill that horrific night.

The second part of the DLC is the Mercenaries Reunion. This gametype includes Excella Gionne, CEO of Tricell Corporation, and a member of the STARS team, Barry Burton. The gametype also includes many others you can unlock as you rank up through various levels; two of them are Chris and Sheva in unique costumes.

What’s Not
Unfortunately, LIN doesn’t support any gear that you obtained in the main story, such as a grenade launcher or a double-barrel shotgun with unlimited ammo. You have a standard pistol, first-aid spray, and other essentials. Don’t panic. You can find some special weapons throughout the estate to take down heavy bosses more easily.

I’ve also noticed that the “worm-cutioner” is used frequently throughout the estate. You’re probably wondering what that is. It’s a mini-boss in a sense: a large, deformed test subject. Dramatic music starts playing and you’ll know when one is near. I’ll give you a hint: whatever you do, don’t stand near him too long.

Final Word
If you’re a loyal Resident Evil fan, this DLC is right for you. It gives you another perspective on the story. Even if you didn’t enjoy the main storyline, this will make up for it. It’s set at a reasonable price of 400 Microsoft Points and $5.00 on PlayStation Network. If you didn’t get a chance to pick up Resident Evil 5 when it released last year, the Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition will release March 9, 2010 for the Xbox 360 and PS3. It will include the original game and all four content packs.
