Some companies settle disputes legal action; others settle them through Quake 3 matches. Case in point: Mojang founder Markus "Notch" Persson who was challenged to a match of Quake 3 Arena from a person who was giving away copies of Minecraft. Well, technically, he was providing a page with Mojang's Minecraft launcher embedded in it.
The site was shut down, regardless of the outcome, but the pirate, presumably a Minecraft fan, used the situation as an opportunity to converse with the game's creator and even challenge him to a Quake 3 match. Big. Mistake.
After a delay, the match finally took place yesterday with Notch livestreaming it for all to see. Notch, Minecraft lead designer Jens Bergensten, and Mojang business developer Daniel Kaplan took on Dylan and co. and, well, crushed them. I hope the lesson was learned.
How confident is Notch in his Quake 3 skills? Well, let's just say he also challenged Bethesda in a match in order to get them to drop the "Scrolls" lawsuit.
So what was the penalty for the pirate losing the match? According to Notch, the losers now have to make a dubstep song. Ouch. In all honesty, Notch was very cool about the whole situation.
"It grew so big it became a problem for us, so I asked him to take it down. He did, but challenged us to quake. Awesome kid. And he's like 14, too!"
Don't mess with Notch and his Quake 3 skills. Bam!
