I was actually having this very conversation with some colleagues the other day; we did some weak math and came to the fact-less conclusion that League of Legends has to be the largest game in the world right now. What exactly does “largest game” entail? I have no idea. It’s interesting that just a week later Riot Games puts out this infographic showing that League of Legends is the most played video game in the world. To me, that could mean ‘largest game.’
In the process of proving that LoL is the most played video game in the world, Riot attached some rather amusing stats in this infographic which can be found HERE. For instance, everyone’s favorite hat wearing Yordle, Teemo, dies 6.5 million times a day. Poor little guy, everyone seems to be picking on him recently; the crime of being popular I suppose. 6.5 deaths a day translates to 75 deaths a second – that’s a lot of respawning.
Another fun fact is that League of Legends has significantly more ‘Likes’ on Facebook than Psy’s out of control hit Gangnam Style. LoL rocks 4.1 million likes while Psy is at a lowly 1.4 million. I guess LoL just has way more heeeeeeey sexy ladies than Psy does. It’s hard to take it all in, I know, I get it, trust me.
One of the facts that blew me away was the amount of time players play LoL vs. the amount of time players have played the Halo series since 2004. Halo has 2+ billion game hours all time and League of Legends has 1+billion every month. Those numbers just really put it into perspective for me.
If you are a LoL player or not, it’s worth taking the time to check out this infographic riddled with data for your enjoyment. The beast that is League of Legends is only snowballing and I don’t see it stopping anytime soon. Don’t forget to watch the world championship season 2 finals tomorrow, Saturday October 13th at 6:30m PST.
